Are you confident that the produce you buy is free from harmful pesticide residues? Do you wonder what measures are taken to ensure the food you serve your family is safe? Food safety is a major concern for consumers today, and the agricultural industry is taking steps to address it. At Debbane Agri, we have been committed to tackling these issues head-on through our Integrated Crop Management (ICM) approach. But how does ICM work, and can it truly ensure that our food is safe while maintaining high yields?
What is ICM and How Does it Work?
ICM is a comprehensive and balanced approach to farming that integrates several areas of crop management to achieve safe, sustainable, and productive agriculture. It doesn’t eliminate pesticide use entirely but focuses on using it responsibly, combining it with other strategies to minimize harm. Here’s how ICM works across different facets:
- Pest and Disease Control: Using natural predators, biological solutions, and monitoring techniques to minimize chemical intervention. Chemical pesticides are used only as a last resort, reducing environmental impact.
- Soil Health Management: Enriching soil with organic matter, crop rotation, and managing nutrients to create optimal growing conditions. Healthy soil reduces the need for fertilizers and supports stronger crops.
- Water Efficiency: Implementing precise irrigation techniques, like drip irrigation, to conserve water resources while maintaining crop quality. This also helps minimize fungal diseases linked to overwatering.
- Crop Selection and Diversification: Choosing crops that are best suited for the environment and rotating them to maintain soil fertility and reduce pest cycles.
- Timely Observations and Monitoring: Conducting regular field checks to identify early signs of stress, pest invasion, or disease, allowing for timely interventions that prevent large-scale crop damage.
- Sustainable Practices: Incorporating cover crops, natural composting, and reducing tillage to improve soil structure, prevent erosion, and promote biodiversity.
These integrated practices work together to strike the right balance between high agricultural productivity and long-term sustainability, ensuring that the food on your table is safe and environmentally responsible.
Debbane Agri’s ICM Trial Fields: Real Success Stories
The local Lebanese market has been buzzing with concerns, especially around pesticide residues in high-consumption crops like strawberries and eggplants. In response, Debbane Agri launched its ICM program in February, aiming to promote safer and more sustainable farming methods. Our demo plots have yielded promising results, demonstrating the effectiveness of our ICM approach.
1. Pesticide-Free Strawberries in the North
Our first trial took place on a strawberry plot managed by agricultural engineer Elias El Haj. The aim was to produce strawberries without any pesticide residues—a challenging feat given the delicate nature of the crop. With careful planning and execution of ICM methods, the results were outstanding. The strawberries met all local and international safety standards, with no chemical residues detected. This success story showcases the power of observation and timing, proving that it’s possible to produce safe, clean, and high-quality produce using a balanced approach.

2. Chemical-Free Eggplants in the South
Another demonstration plot was established in the Zahrani area, under the care of Dr. Bilal El Zaatari. This plot focused on growing eggplants—a staple in Lebanese cuisine—without exceeding EU standards for pesticide residues. Through rigorous monitoring, precise pest management, and a tailored irrigation schedule, the plot delivered impressive results: the eggplant samples were completely free from pesticide residues. This achievement highlights the effectiveness of our ICM methods in meeting stringent safety standards while ensuring crop productivity.
